“When I’m Gone:

Don’t be a Hero”

John 13:36 – 14:7

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”

  (John 14:6).

Jesus was on a journey to heaven via the cross

“Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father…. [He knew] that he had come from God and was going back to God”

(John 13:1, 3)

Jesus was on a journey to heaven the Father via the cross (cf. 17:3).

Those who reject Jesus cannot follow him

“Just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come’” (13:33).

  FLASHBACK

FLASHBACK

“[The Pharisees asked him] ‘Where is your Father?’ Jesus answered, ‘You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.’ These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. So he said to them again, ‘I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come…. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins’” (John 8:19-22, 24).

  They reject the way

  They don’t know the destination

Those who love Jesus cannot follow him in their own strength

“Where I am going you cannot follow me now …. the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times” (13:36, 38)

  FLASHFORWARD

FLASHFORWARD

“Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.”

  (John 18:25-27)

Like Peter, we overestimate our loyalty to Jesus and undestimate our sin

Those who love Jesus can follow him because of his death; he is the Way!

“Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward” (John 13:36).

Jesus “going” by the way of the cross is the means by which he “prepares a place” for us (14:2)

Jesus “comes again” at the resurrection (14:3,
cf. 16:16-22)

(Elsewhere the bible speaks about a Second Coming of Jesus, when he will return from heaven to bring in a New Heaven and a New Earth, but that’s not the idea here)

  We know the way

  We know the destination

  There is no other way

We cannot by ourselves find the way

Jesus is the way, and the truth and the life. Noone comes to the Father except through him
