“When I’m Gone:

Love One Another”

John 13:31-35

  “Love one another”

    Universal

    Easy

“Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (v34)

  Much harder.

  “Love your neighbour as yourself”
(Leviticus 19:18)

  “Love [the stranger] as yourself”
(Leviticus 19:34)

  “Love your enemies”
(Matthew 5:44)

“As I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34)

    “one another”

    “as I have loved you”

     humbly

     sacrificially

     for your good

    Uniquely, recognisably Christian (v35)

A command in the context of glory (vv31-32)

The Father wants to glory the Son

“Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it” (John 8:50)

“If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me” (John 8:54)

The Son wants to glorify the Father

“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name” (John 12:27-28)

The Father and Son want to glorify each other

““Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you” (John 17:1)

“I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed” (John 17:4-5)

Love one another because of the glory of the love of the Trinity, shown at the cross!

  COFFEE QUESTIONS

How can you love the members of Grace Church Greenwich, and other Christians around the world, in a self-giving, sacrificial, humble, cross-like way?

As well as spontaneous acts of love, can you think of any ways you could plan to love more? Changes to your diary? New patterns of life?

What opportunities do you have to invite unbelievers among us, so they can witnesss this unique love?
