2 Kings 11-12
INTRODUCTION: The three types
of superhero
Elijah and Elisha were prophets in Israel
Meanwhile in Judah...
Jehoiada (married to Jehosheba) is a priest
Joash/Jehoash is a king in the line of David
Act 1: The house of David is rescued
Granny (“Queenâ€) Athaliah wants to kill her grandson, because he is the rightful heir to the throne
Auntie Jeshosheba hides her nephew to keep him from harm
Uncle Jehoiada orchestrates a brilliant plan to preserve the royal line. He...
hides Joash in the temple
gets him safely crowned
hands him some bible-reading notes
executes the godless Athaliah
makes a covenant that the people should be God’s people
oversees the destruction of Baal-worship
has the king enthroned
brings about a ‘quiet’ city
And so the house of David is rescued
Act 2: The house of the LORD is (sort of) restored
Money is collected to repair the temple but no progress is made
King Joram tells them to get a move on
Jehoiada the priest introduces donation boxes and two people counting the collection. More money is raised and work begins
And so the house of the LORD is restored (sort of)
Summary
There is more hope in Judah because of the house of David
There is more hope in Judah because of the house of the LORD
There is a rescued house of David and a restored house of the LORD because of faithful Jehoiada!
APPLICATION
1) Be a Jehoiada (or a husband and wife Jehoiada and Jehosheba team)
2) Give thanks to God for one who later filled Jehoiada’s shoes (and Joram’s shoes, and Elisha’s shoes)
